November Virtual Training: A Year in Review-Expanded General Assistance

General Assistance has long been considered a “program of last resort.” Effective January 1, 2024, Public Act 103-0192 significantly expanded the scope of services that townships may provide under General Assistance programs, including public safety, environmental protection, public transportation, health (including mental, behavioral, eye, and dental), recreation, libraries, and social services for the poor and aged. This session, led by expert township attorneys, will focus on the evolution of this new law over the past year, exploring the challenges and successes townships have encountered in interpreting, implementing, and adapting to these changes, with an emphasis on practical considerations for navigating the expanded role of General Assistance in supporting community needs.
